Private Research and Development Institutions

Several nationally prominent private, non-profit research institutes have established significant centers in Virginia in recent years: SRI’s Center for Advanced Drug Research in the Shenandoah Valley; the National Institute of Aerospace in Hampton and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Loudoun County.

National Institute of Aerospace: A strategic partner of NASA Langley Research Center and conducts leading-edge aerospace research and development through a consortium of research universities including Georgia Tech, Hampton University, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina State University, the University of Maryland, the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, Old Dominion University, the College of William & Mary and the AIAA Foundation.

Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Janelia Farm Research Campus: The Janelia Farm Research Campus houses a world-class research center where scientists from many disciplines gather to collaborate closely, in small teams, on some of science's most challenging problems. The Janelia Farm complex includes a large laboratory building, conference facilities, and housing, all designed to blend into the natural surroundings of the site. The planning for both the scientific program and the campus facilities was intertwined, with each part overlapping and influencing the other.

SRI Shenandoah Valley: SRI Shenandoah Valley was established in 2006 as the SRI Cnter for Advanced Drug Research(CADRE), but has expanded to include other areas of health, biomedical research, drug discovery, and drug development. The center's research includes basic research in emerging infectious disease, metaboloic disease and proteomics; applied research in therapeutics includingdrugs, biologics, and vaccines; and personalized medicine through the development of companion diagnostics and biomarkers.
